Students will be working on an exciting math project this week where they will demonstrate how to use different math strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. Please be on the lookout for an email message from your child sharing this work with you.
In reading, students are thinking deeply about character traits. They are learning how to use text evidence to support their thinking about the traits of the characters they are reading about. At home, you might want to discuss character traits with your student when you read with them. Be sure to help your child to find evidence in the text to support their thinking!
In writing, students are in the beginning stages of learning how to explain the steps in a process with specific language. Thanks to the kid's meal prizes from Chick-fil-A, students will be experimenting and reflecting on following the steps in a process as they create a variety of origami-style paper animals and paper airplanes. Upon completion, students will reflect on how clear (or unclear) the given steps in the process were. This will help students to understand how important it is for a writer to think about their audience when they write.
In Social Studies, students are learning about the United States presidents, and patriotic symbols.
For Friday, please remember to send in hand-held devices fully charged and with easy to access books for your child to read. Also, ScootPad homework and Reading Logs are due this Friday. PLEASE encourage your student to participate in the student blogging project. It is not necessary to read a long chapter book for this. There are a great deal of shorter 'everybody' books (picture books) that can be read for this project. Projects can be turned in through our class blog, handwritten on paper, or even typed. All projects are due March 4th. I am looking forward to reading our student's opinions on award winning books!
FYI: There was a misprint in the Oldham Era regarding the Open Reception/Art Show taking place at the Oldham County Arts Center this week. In the Era, it stated that all elementary schools' open reception would take place on Tuesday, February 18, from 6:00-7:30 pm. This is not true for Crestwood Elementary. The Open Reception for our school is on Thursday, February 20, from 6:00-7:30. Students with artwork on display have been notified by Ms. Thurman, however all families are invited to attend the art show. As always, please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
Highest Regards,
Gina Weber
