Thanks to everyone who helped support our fifth grade friends with gum and mints during testing. The majority of KPREP will be completed this Tuesday.
As you know, this Friday is the second grade spring picnic. Not only will we enjoy a picnic lunch together outside, but you will also have the opportunity to view your child's completed family story using an app called Aurasma. If you are planning on attending, feel free to download the app and set up your free account before attending our writing showcase. The app works great on my iPhone! If you are planning on attending, but are unable to download the app, please let me know by Wednesday, June 3rd so I can arrange for an iPad for you. You can meet us in our classroom at 11:00 for the showcase. We will head to the cafeteria at 11:20 to get our lunches, and I will line students up at 12:15 to return to class.
This week, students will begin a new science unit on plants. Students will read and write about preparing a garden, the change from seeds to seedlings, and the parts of a plant. We will also complete several reflective writing activities including the Dear Student Blog and student growth as writers this school year. Students will take their final word wall paragraph test this Friday. In math, students will continue to subtract three digit numbers with and without regrouping. Students will also continue to practice skip counting by 3's and 4's while making noticings about how this relates to multiplication. Thursday and Friday, studnets will go to P.E., so please remind your student to dress appropriately.
While this week will be the final week for assigned homework, please help your child avoid summer academic digression by making sure they read out loud for 20 minutes each day. Please read the graphic at the end of this message carefully as it explains the importance of reading every day! Sudents will have access to several online reading and math resources throughout the summer. These include FrontRow, TenMarks Jam Session, Raz-Kids, TumbleBooks, and Big Universe. Please see the Learning Links page of this website for quick access to all of these resources and more!
In addition, as your child continues to grow as a reader, it is important to help them choose books that will support their growth. Do not forget about the Choosing Books page of this website as it contains resources and strategies to assist your child in choosing 'Just Right Now Books.' A link to this week's homework can be found here. Please let me know if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.
Highest Regards,
Gina Weber
