WOW! It's already September! We have so much going on this month. Students will go to the library for checkout every other Tuesday starting this week (Sept. 2, Sept. 16, and Sept 30). Students are welcome to return their books whenever they are finished with them, but can only have two books checked out at a time.
Students will go to music class this week, PE starting on Sept. 9, and Technology starting on Sept. 16. Please make sure they dress appropriately on P.E. days and try to have their headphones turned in for technology starting on Sept. 16.
Other than reading, homework will begin on Monday, September, 15. This year, I will send a new homework sheet in your child's homework folder (this will be a different folder from their Communication Folder) on Mondays. Students will turn in their homework folder with their completed work on Fridays. If we are ever off from school on a Monday, the homework folder will go home on the first day of the school week. If we are ever off from school on a Friday then the homework folder will be due on the last day of the school week. It is very important that your student return their homework folders so that I can get them ready for each new week. Please have your child read out loud for 15-20 minutes each night starting now! Reading aloud will be a regular expectation in addition to homework in other subjects. Reading aloud will help your child gain fluency and accuracy as a reader. Feel free to get creative with this- your child may enjoy reading to you, their siblings, pets, stuffed animals, etc.
Please visit the Literacy at Home page of our class website for tips on helping your child with reading at home. Also, please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about reading at home with your child.
All students are set up on Raz-Kids, and can use this program for their nightly reading requirements. You can find a quick link to Raz-Kids on the Learning Links page of our class website. Please let me know if you are having trouble accessing Raz-Kids from home. Also, there are great articles your child might enjoy reading on Wonderopolis.com. A quick link to Wonderopolis can be found on the Wonderopolis and Kid Friendly Search Engines page of our class website.
If you would like to order books for your child from Scholastic, please visit the Welcome page of our class website for a quick link to their website and for our class activation code. You can order books at any time, so don't feel like you have to wait for a flyer to come home. I usually place orders during the last week of each month.
Also, September 10 will be our first Early Release Day. Please make sure your child and I both know how they will be going home on this day. We also have a new date set for Open House. It will now take place on September 18 from 5:00 to 6:00. Students will also have an 'in school' field trip on Sept. 30. It will take place in our school library. Be on the lookout for a field trip permission form in your child's blue communication folder.
Please encourage your student to participate in the Student Blog! I update their blog about every month. I am going to keep the current blog open for the month of September to give more students an opportunity to participate. Students should only use their initials to identify themselves on the blog. Also, if your student is unable to respond to the blog on a computer, they can handwrite their response and turn it in to me at school. Participation in the blog is completely optional, but it is a great tool I use to strengthen our class community.
This week, we had a wonderful new addition to our class- a monarch caterpillar that the class named Num Num Num! I have added a new page in honor of our new friend who has already begun the chrysalis stage! Students and I were amazed to watch this happen before our very eyes on Friday. I took a video to share with our class community. Don't forget to check it out- Monarch Butterfly!
Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, and please take the poll below. Second grade parents are the best! Thanks!
