We had a very eventful week last week! As you know, we were unable to take the MAP Test on Wednesday as originally planned. The problems we were experiencing have been resolved, and our class will resume testing this Wednesday. However, we still have last week's testing session to make up. For now, I have not been notified if our make-up session will happen this week or next. Knowing that it could happen with very little notice, it is important that students are prepared for a make-up session any day this week. You can help your child by limiting any stress at home, helping them get a good night's sleep, and giving them a healthy breakfast each morning.
Wednesday is also an Early Release Day. Please make sure your child knows how they will be getting home on this day, and please remember to send in a note if they will have a different means of transportation on this day.
This week, students will finish their P.E. rotation and begin a 5 day rotation of computers on Thursday. In Science, we are just getting into our study of the different states of matter. Students clearly understand that matter comes in three states, solids, liquids and gasses. I have encouraged them to come up with questions they are wondering about matter. This will help guide our thinking as we dive deeper into this topic. In math we are continuing our study of measurement, and will begin to compare lengths of the different objects we measure this week. In addition, students will continue to notice the differences in units of measurement that are most common to us- inches, centimeters, feet, and yards. In ELA, students will learn about the writing process, and will contniue to monitor their thinking as they read independently. *We have not yet started ELA Unit 2 as indicated on the Newsletter page of our site. This will begin soon!
For homework, remember that students are to complete two ScootPad 'practices' in both ELA and in Math. Reading Logs will be collected on Friday, and library books are due by Friday. Don't forget that students are asked to read one picture book and one article on Wonderopolis for their September reading log. Students are really enjoying the Lucky Listener poems, so please continue to support them with this at home. Maybe have them call a close family member or friend to read to them over the phone, or use a digital tool like Skype or Face Time! Please encourage your student to participate in our Student Blog, and don't forget that students will have a Word Wall test every Tuesday. I'm looking forward to a great week!
Highest Regards,
Gina Weber
