Thanks to everyone who came out to Open House last Thursday. I hope you found the information helpful in supporting your child at home. For those of you who were unable to make it, please check your child's communication folder for the handouts that were given at Open House. Please also return the following 4 forms as soon as you can:
- Highlights: Even if you mark NO, please return the form with your signature. I can get a lot of great classroom items for FREE just with your signature!
- Highlights Puzzlemania: Same as above. Please return as soon as you can!
- Donors Choose: At this time I do not have a Donors Choose project. However, if I were to submit a project and get it funded, I would need to take pictures of our students using the items I recieve and add them to my funded projects page on the Donors Choose website. Only sign and return this form if you will give permission for me to use your child's picture for this purpose.
- Website Feedback Form: Please let me know how things are going with this website as our communication tool. I gain so much for your feedback.
Mark Your Calendar: Students will go to Technology on Monday, and then begin a 5 day rotation of Art on Tuesday. Students will also take the MAP Test for Language this Wednesday. Homweork folders will go home on Monday and will be due on Friday. Here is a link to next week's homework. We will also take our Word Wall Test on Friday. Please try to have your field trip permission slip in by Monday, and your Scholastic Book Orders in by Friday. I will always place Scholastic Book Orders at the end of each month, usually around the 28th. You can always place online orders for Scholastic, so don't feel like you need to wait to get the flyer.
In ELA (English & Language Arts)- Students will continue to study the comprehension strategy of asking questions while they read. We will also begin to explore the Who (characters), What (beginning, middle, and end), Where (setting), When (setting), Why (problem), and How (solution) of a story. Consider asking these questions to your child as you read with them at home.
Students will also be working on writing a page in a class book we began on Friday. We are using The Important Book, by Margaret Wise Brown as a mentor text. Students chose a noun to write about for this project. At home, you might ask your student what noun they are writing about at school. You might also ask them how they are describing that noun using as many of their 5 senses as they can.
In Science- Students will explore animal habitats, and create a Habitat For Sale advertisement by the end of the week.
In Math- Students will continue to explore measurement. Specifically, students will learn about
- choosing the most efficient tool for measuring,
- measuring the same object in inches and centimeters/ feet and yards, and
- estimating measurements in centimeters, inches, feet, and yards.
Consider practicing any of these skills at home. If you are measuring a cup, you might ask your child: What would be the best unit to measure this cup in- centimeters, inches, feet, or yards? Why do you think so? About how many inches and centimeters do you think this cup is (estimate)? Why do you think so? Finally, you might measure the cup in both inches and in centimeters and talk about why the centimeter measurement is greater than the inches measurement.
I'm looking forward to a great week at school. Please continue to communicate your comments, questions, and concerns. Thanks for your support! Second grade families are the best!
Highest Regards,
Gina Weber
